MG Comet EV side profile dynamic

MG Comet EV- Is it a “Comet” for its size

For starters, you should know that the MG Comet is the smallest and the cheapest vehicle in the MG’s lineup. It is also the cheapest electric vehicle in the lineup after MG ZS EV. In addition, it is the most affordable EV available on the market. Several MG cars in India cater to different buyers with different budgets and preferences.

If you look at the pictures of this car, it may make you think of a boxier version of the Mahindra Reva (EV). The dual-tone colour scheme Apple Green-Starry Black on this car makes it look even funkier. It’s more of a youth-oriented vehicle.

Regardless of its boxy shape, having an overall length of only 2974, the MG Comet EV takes on the likes of the Tata Tiago and the Citroen eC3. They are competitors because of similar pricing. The starting ex-showroom price of the Comet EV is Rs 7.98 lakh and it goes up to 9.90 lakh.
So, let’s list out the offerings of the recently-launched MG Comet EV below:

As mentioned in the introduction, the MG Comet is currently the smallest car in the market. Unlike other offerings, irrespective of their fuel types, the Comet has a length of 2974mm, which makes it the shortest vehicle. Further, it has a width of 1505, a height of 1640mm, and it sits on a wheelbase of 2010mm. With that height, it makes the tallest rival of the Tata Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3.

But considering its wheelbase, this car isn’t rear-passenger friendly until and unless you have a kid sitting at the back. At the same time, you shouldn’t expect a good boot space from this car. Only small-sized luggage you can load without folding the seats, such as backpacks and office bags. But you can, of course, increase the load capacity by utilising the 50:50 split seats.

Furthermore, it is a two-door vehicle. That translates to folding down the rear seats for the rear passengers to ingress. This vehicle, overall, is practical as a third car or if you are single or a couple. You can check out the MG Comet review to have an idea about the space from the inside.

In terms of specifications, this small-size electric vehicle from MG cars is powered by a standard 17.3 kWh battery pack, which has a motor type of permanent magnet synchronous motor, and it is tuned to churn out 41.42 bhp and 110 Nm of peak torque. Its torque is pretty impressive, especially considering its size. The torque is only 4 Nm lesser than the Tata Tiago EV’s 114 Nm.

Like any other EV, the Comet also has a single-speed automatic transmission. The electric motors are placed on the rear axles, making the Comet EV a rear-wheel-drive car.
Furthermore, this vehicle has a claimed range of 230 km. Please note that the claimed mileage/range is drawn out in a controlled environment. Having said that, the real-world mileage may vary with the local traffic conditions and individuals’ driving styles.

As far as the charging is concerned, the MG takes seven hours to replenish its battery from a 3.3 kW charger. There is no fast charger available as of now. Considering the Comet price, MG Motors should have offered a fast charger as well.

Besides the engine’s performance, the MG Comet has a McPherson Strut suspension at the front and a multi-link coil suspension at the rear. This suspension setup is cost-effective but also suitable for Indian roads. Carmakers in India usually tune the suspension on the softer side, as a soft suspension absorbs the undulation and bumps from potholes with ease. Having said that, it shouldn’t make the driver lament the rideability.

Going further down, the braking duties of this vehicle are taken care of by drum brakes at the rear and disc brakes at the front. It runs on 12-inch alloy wheels. This vehicle has a tyre profile of 145/70 R12. As seen in the images, its tyre profile seems proportionate to the body size of the MG Comet.

At the Comet EV price, especially the top model, this vehicle offers a 10.25-inch touchscreen display, which has connectivity features, such as Bluetooth, USB and auxiliary. It also has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Further, there is a total number of three fast-charging USB ports in the MG Comet. It misses out on a wireless charging tray, though.

Apart from that, the top model of this vehicle has 55+ i-Smart connected car features. Those connected car features comprise live tracking, live speed, geo-fence alerts, range left, upcoming service(s), and last parked location, to name a few. Other notable features include keyless entry, an anti-pinch power window (driver’s side only), a smart start system, chit-chat voice interaction, and voice control. Moreover, you also get a fully digital instrument cluster with an embedded LCD screen, which shows all the relevant readings. Considering the Comet EV price, especially the top model, this vehicle is very well-equipped.

As for the exterior lighting, the MG Comet has LED lights at the front and rear. It also has an ‘MG’ illuminated logo with chrome inserts. The foglights can only be had at the rear but not at the front. It also has adjustable headlights.

On the safety front, the MG Comet has dual airbags as standard. It also gets ABS with EBD, central locking, a tyre pressure monitoring system, ESC, manual parking brake, rear camera, ISOFIX child-seat anchorages, hill-assist, and speed-sensing auto-door lock.
So, these were a few essential new-age features of the MG Comet. You can access the curated list of features and specifications on the autoX website.
